Public Works Department Overview

 

Overview

The Public Works Department is responsible for planning, designing, constructing and maintaining public streets, parks and City open spaces; public trees; utilities including sewer and storm drains; traffic; and City vehicles. Additionally, the Department is responsible for the City’s capital improvement program, controlling work and activity in City rights-of-way, and maintaining public works records. The department carries out its functions through the divisions of Administration, Maintenance, and Engineering.

Administration Division

The Administration Division is responsible for policy implementation, human resources, and fiscal administration. Services include administration of personnel, budgeting, payroll, and public information and relations. The division provides management and administrative support for all department operations, and coordinates, executes and evaluates all Public Works programs. The division also helps insure compliance with federal, state, and regional regulations, and the management of the department’s operating and capital funds.

 
Street Maintenance Division

The major responsibility of this division is to maintain public facilities and provide safety for residents, businesses, and public. These services include: maintaining sidewalks, streets and curbing; repairing street potholes; and responding to service requests generated from the public and other City departments. This work includes signs and marking, street trees, alleys, traffic signals, street lights, the sewer collection system, and storm drain system. Additional services include emergency response to accidents and incidents in the City’s rights-of-way and streets, asphalt repair, removal of illegally dumped trash, parkway and shoulder repair, street sweeping, graffiti removal, and the support of special events.

Engineering Division

The Engineering Division is responsible for managing the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). This program includes the planning, programming, design, construction management, and construction of new projects throughout the City. The Engineering Division works with the State Department of Transportation (CalTrans), the Regional Water Quality Control Board, the Air Quality Management District, Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, Los Angeles County Public Works Department, MTA, residents, businesses and interested community groups to ensure that these projects address community, regional, state, and federal objectives. The Engineering Division is also responsible for pavement management, storm water management, flood control, activities in the City’s rights-of-way, and traffic management.
