COMPTON– Over 1,000 Compton residents lined the streets surrounding Wilson Park for the Compton Christmas Grocery Giveaway Wednesday, December 23. Sponsored by Compton native’s comedian and actor Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) and ESPN broadcaster and NFL Veteran Marcellus Wiley, along with Mayor Aja Brown and the Compton City Council, turkeys with all of the fixings including the world-famous “Patti Pie” were handed out by volunteers to families in need just in time for Christmas Dinner.
“Anthony Anderson and Marcellus Wiley have been great partners to the City of Compton,” said Mayor Aja Brown. “Between Walmart who donated the food and CareMore who provided gloves and scarves and all of the volunteers who helped put this event together, we were able to positively impact over a thousand families in Compton this Christmas by making sure those in need were taken care of. That’s what the holidays are all about, helping those who are less fortunate.”
“I grew up here,” commented Anthony Anderson. “This is my home. This is the city and the people who helped mold me into the man that I am today. That’s why my children, myself, my mother, my grandmother and various other members of my family are here to help give back today. This time of year is all about giving. I’ve been blessed to be able to give back and that’s why I am here and I hope that this catches on and it spreads. That’s what it’s about. It’s about giving back and helping your fellow man.”
“It’s the season and we love it,” said Marcellus Wiley. “We have to come out here and make a U-turn and give back for everything that they gave to us. You never think that one day you could have this kind of impact. It’s a blessed opportunity.”
Walmart generously donated all of the food given away. CareMore handed out gloves and scarves and 92.3 The Real LA provided the music. The event was also supported by Gym Etiquette 4 U, Compton Empowered, Conceptz Event Management and MadMac.
