On Friday, March 2, 2018, Ava DuVernay teamed up with Mayor Aja Brown to return to her hometown, Compton, to host the first community screening of her upcoming film Wrinkle In Time at the Dollarhide Community Center! At Ava's request, Disney created a pop-up theater with top quality sounds and visuals for 300 students from Celerity Charter and Barack Obama Charter Schools to watch this fantasy film in style. Students took pictures on the red carpet with Mayor Brown and Maliyah Mason, Miss Compton 2018, and enjoyed the full theater experience with hotdogs, nachos, and popcorn.
Before the private screening, students listened in on a conversation between Ava and Mayor Brown where Ava explained the importance of creating this film: "So that kids of color - black and brown kids - can see themselves fly, and hop planets, and save the universe. To see that they can do whatever they want to do and that nothing is impossible” says Ava DuVernay.
