Volunteers from Delta Air Lines, City of Compton and the community will join KaBOOM! on Monday, April 29, 2019 to transform an empty site into a kid-designed, state-of-the-art playground in just six hours at Gonzales Park Community Center, located at 1101 West Cressey Street, Compton, CA 90221. The new playground will help make play the easy choice for kids and families in Compton.
In April, kids from the surrounding community came together to draw their dream playground. The playground is based off their drawings and will provide thousands of kids in Compton with a great, safe place to play over its lifetime.
Play is essential to physical, creative, cognitive, social and emotional development. Currently, kids and families spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only 1-in-5 children live within walking distance of a park or playground. This play deficit is having profound consequences for kids physically, socially and cognitively. Children and families need a place to play every day in order to be active and healthy. Through this project, City of Compton will work with Delta Air Lines and KaBOOM! to make a difference in their community and address the most urgent needs of kids.
This playground is part of a broader effort led by Delta Air Lines and KaBOOM! to ensure communities have great PLAYces for kids and families. Through this partnership, Delta Air Lines and KaBOOM! are creating an oasis where kids feel valued and loved, and where their potential is supported, nurtured and celebrated. Delta is an active member of the LA community and supports dozens of organizations near and dear to the hearts of Angelenos. The airline was recognized for its community commitment by the Los Angeles City Council in September 2018.
