YOBANI DAMIAN ULIN, is a familiar name to The City of Compton Parks & Recreation Department Staff & Administration. Yobani began participating in youth sports in 2014 at Kelly Park until The Covid-19 Pandemic interrupted all organized recreational activities within Compton Parks & Recreation Department. His ability to play multiple sports contributed greatly to the accumulation of trophies and awards for Kelly Park.
Yobani was introduced to the game of cricket in 2017 when he and other kids attended a cricket clinic held by Southern California Junior Cricket Academy (SCJCA), (a non-profit organization), at Kelly Park. Yobani along with about 20 other kids signed up with SCJCA’s cricket program and The Compton Sharks Youth cricket Team was formed. Yobani has continued playing with The Compton Sharks Youth Cricket Team and has become a Certified Cricket Coach (Level 1) at the age of 15.
During the pandemic, Yubani, as well as many kids from Kelly Park, continued playing soccer and cricket together wherever and whenever they could. Under the constant mentorship and coaching of Coach Chris Olivares, Coach David Sentance & Coach Mustafa Khan, Yobani Ulin continued to improve his skills in the game of cricket and soccer.
The USC Trojan Cricket Club has worked in conjunction with Southern California Junior Cricket Academy (SCJCA) for several years providing volunteer cricket coaching for Compton youth at Kelly Park.
Three months ago, The Compton Sharks started back receiving weekly advanced cricket training with Coach Vedant Jain of The USC Trojan Cricket Club at The USC Campus. Yobani, now 16 years of age, displayed excellent skills during training and was subsequently asked to play on a USC Trojan Cricket Club Team.
Recently, officials of Southern California Cricket Association (SCCA), the governing body of cricket in Southern California, watched as The Compton Sharks competed against The Hollywood Golden Oldies at Woodley Park Cricket Complex in Van Nuys, California. Everyone was so impressed by Yubani’s athleticism and natural skill level, that he was selected by
SCCA’s Youth Academy as a playing member with SCCA-SONICS-U16, an under 16, highly skilled team. Yobani will now have the opportunity to match skills with kids from all across The United States and potentially travel as well.
Yobani is the first cricket player from Compton to ever be selected as a playing member on an SCCA Youth Team. He is the first developmental cricket player from Compton to ever play on a USC Trojan Cricket Club Team while still in high school.
Yobani Ulin, a District 4 resident attended Kelly Elementary and Roosevelt Middle School. He is presently a junior at Dominguez High School.
