Damon M. Brown
Damon M. Brown is the City Attorney for the City of Compton, where, as the Chief Legal Officer for the City, he leads an office of attorneys and staff who advise the City Council and all City officers in matters pertaining to their offices, represent the City in civil litigation and code enforcement matters, prosecute Municipal Code violations, review all bonds and contracts, and bring affirmative litigation to protect the rights of consumers and citizens.
Mr. Brown was appointed to the seat of City Attorney by the Compton City Council August 1, 2019. Prior to his appointment, Mr. Brown provided advice and counsel to and represented private and public employers, including the City of Compton, in all phases of federal and state litigation, in labor negotiations, and before administrative and regulatory bodies. For more than 13 years, he has practiced law at some of the most prestigious private law firms in the State of California and, indeed, the nation.
Mr. Brown is highly respected in the legal community, having been designated by Southern California Super Lawyers as a Rising Star each year since 2014 and as one of the Top 40 Lawyers Under 40 by the National Bar Association in 2011. He has served as President of the John M. Langston Bar Association of Los Angeles, Inc. and the California Association of Black Lawyers. Currently Mr. Brown serves on the Board of Trustees of the Los Angeles County Bar Association and was appointed by the Board of Trustees of the State Bar of California to the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation to vet judicial candidates on behalf of Governor Jerry Brown from 2015-2018. He served as a Judge Pro Tem for the Los Angeles Superior Court.
Mr. Brown is a frequent speaker on various legal topics at conferences and seminars throughout the country. He is a graduate of the Vanderbilt University Law School with distinction and the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated with high honors. He also studied abroad in the Caribbean and Europe and holds a certificate in international mediation and conciliation from the University of Bologna in Italy.
