Compton Celebrates Founders’ Day and 138 Years of History

The City of Compton invites the public to celebrate Founders’ Day, marking 138 years since the city’s establishment and honoring the vision that shaped the community residents know today.

Founded in 1867 by a group of settlers led by Griffith D. Compton, the City was incorporated on May 11, 1888. Compton was built on the idea of opportunity, growth and community. More than a century later, that foundation continues to guide Compton’s progress and pride.

Founders’ Day is more than a milestone. It is a chance to reflect on Compton’s history, recognize how far the city has come, and celebrate the people who continue to shape its future.

The celebration begins Monday, May 11, with a City Hall Open House from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Residents are invited to step inside, learn more about City operations, and connect with staff. Guided tours will be available from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., offering a closer look at the building and its role in serving the community. The day will conclude with a birthday dessert celebration at 6 p.m. in honor of Compton’s 138th birthday.

Residents are encouraged to attend, take part in the festivities and celebrate the legacy and future of the Hub City.
