Stay Safe During Heat Advisory

The City of Compton is encouraging residents to take precautions as a Heat Advisory remain is in effect. High temperatures can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for older adults, young children, people with chronic medical conditions and those who work or spend long periods outdoors.

One of the best ways to stay safe is to stay cool. If your home does not have air conditioning or becomes too hot, residents are encouraged to visit one of the City's cooling centers during regular operating hours.

Cooling centers are available at:

  • Gonzales Park (Monday-Friday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. | Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.) 
  • Lueders Park (Monday-Friday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. | Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m.) 
  • Dr. Walter R. Tucker Park (Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.)
  • Burrell-MacDonald Park (Monday-Friday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. | Saturday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) 
  • Kelly Park (Monday-Friday 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. | Saturday 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.) 
  • Dollarhide Community Center (Monday-Friday 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.)

To protect yourself during hot weather:

  • Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Stay indoors or in air-conditioned places whenever possible.
  • Limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, typically between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and a hat when outdoors.
  • Use sunscreen to help protect your skin.
  • Take frequent breaks if you must work or exercise outside.
  • Never leave children, older adults or pets inside a parked vehicle.
  • Check on neighbors, family members and friends who may need assistance during the heat.

Know the warning signs of heat-related illness. Symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea, heavy sweating, muscle cramps or confusion may signal heat exhaustion or heat stroke. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, call 911 immediately.

The City of Compton is committed to helping residents stay safe during periods of extreme heat. If you need a place to cool down, visit one of the City's cooling centers and take the necessary steps to protect yourself and your loved ones.
