Sheriff's Department Provides Update on Fourth of July Homicide Investigations
On Thursday, July 16, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department provided an update on the homicide investigations stemming from the incidents that occurred in Compton over the Fourth of July weekend.
"This senseless, and I do mean senseless, violence took the lives of 19-year-old Meah Bordenave-Jenkins and 37-year-old Eric Washington and forever changed the lives of their families and our community," said Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna. "Today we are announcing the arrest and formal charges [of], a 50-year-old man from the Los Angeles area who we believe is responsible for the murder of Meah and the attempted murder of two additional surviving female victims. While today's announcement represents an important step towards justice for Meah and her family, our work is very far from being over. We are also seeking the public's help in identifying those responsible for the murder of Eric Washington and the attempted murder of another surviving male victim that occurred that same night."
Sheriff Luna stated during the press conference that the victims were in attendance of a large 4th of July celebration at an apartment complex.
"As detectives worked tirelessly to piece together what occurred, they determined the two shootings happened moments apart but appear to be separate and unrelated acts of horrible violence," Luna said. "The first shooting claimed the life of Eric inside the apartment complex. As attendees fled for safety, a second shooting occurred on Laurel St. where Meah and two other women were struck by gunfire."
Luna also addressed the separate shooting that happened on July 5.
"Deputies from our Compton Station responded to the 2100-block of Grandee Ave., in Compton, where they located a 30-year-old victim Thaddeus Clark and a second adult victim suffering from gunshot wounds during a separate 4th of July gathering...tragically, Mr. Clark did not survive his injuries," Luna said. "We are also urging anyone with any information about Mr. Clark's murder and attempted murder of the surviving victim to contact our Homicide Bureau."

During the press conference, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman and Compton Mayor Emma Sharif also addressed the community, offering their condolences to the victims' families and reaffirming their commitment to seeking justice.
Mayor Sharif also thanked the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Sheriff's Homicide Bureau, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and all law enforcement partners for their continued efforts to bring those responsible to justice.
