Immigration Resources and Knowing Your Rights

Post Date:01/28/2026

All people in the United States, regardless of immigration status, have constitutional rights and protections. The City of Compton understands that federal immigration activity creates anxiety for residents and families. The City is committed to sharing accurate information, connecting residents to trusted resources, and supporting community members who need informational assistance.

Know Your Rights

The Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC) created a Red Card that helps individuals assert their rights during interactions with federal immigration officers. The card is available in more than fifteen languages and may be used in situations such as front door encounters or home visits.

English: https://www.ilrc.org/redcards

En Español: https://www.ilrc.org/redcards#espa%C3%B1ol

During questioning by federal immigration officials, individuals have the right to remain silent. The Red Card informs officers that you are exercising that right and that you would like to speak with an attorney.

If You See Immigration Enforcement Activity

The City of Compton is not notified in advance of ICE enforcement activity and does not receive confirmation when ICE is present in the area.

Immigration enforcement is a federal function and is not under the authority of the City of Compton or the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The following statement was provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 2025, when federal immigration enforcement activity increased and reiterated during by Compton Station's Captain during the January 27 City Council meeting.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is aware of the presence and operations of federal law enforcement agencies within our communities.

The LASD does not enforce civil immigration laws, nor do we ask about an individual's immigration status when we respond to calls for service. Our focus is to maintain peace, uphold public safety, and protect the rights of all residents.

The Sheriff's Department is not involved in any federal law enforcement operations. When federal authorities come under attack and request assistance, we will support them and provide aid.

However, this does not mean that we are assisting with their immigration actions or operations; rather, our objective is to protect them from any violent attacks.

Any assault on federal or local law enforcement is unacceptable.

We recognize and support the constitutional rights of the public to peacefully assemble and express their views. Peaceful protests are a vital part of our democracy, and we are committed to facilitating safe environments where voices can be heard respectfully and without fear.

The Sheriff's Department will continue working with community leaders, advocacy groups, and partner agencies to ensure peaceful public demonstrations.

However, we will address and strictly enforce the law when any acts of violence, arson, or vandalism are committed. These acts will not be tolerated.

The Department remains committed to ensuring transparency and cooperation in the communities we serve in protecting the rights and safety of all people-regardless of legal status.

Protecting Your Family

Residents may choose to prepare a family plan that includes important documents, emergency contacts, school authorizations, and caregiver affidavits. These tools help ensure that children and dependents remain safe and cared for if a parent or guardian is detained.

Conozca Sus Derechos
