🔥 Holiday Fire Safety: Do’s & Don’ts

Things To Do

  • Water your live Christmas trees daily. Dry trees can ignite faster than you might imagine.
  • Use only UL-listed holiday lights and check all light strands for damage. Replace any with frayed wires, loose bulbs, or cracked sockets.
  • Use flame-resistant or non-combustible decorations.
  • Keep candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. Flameless LED candles are a safer option.
  • Stay in the kitchen while cooking. Unattended cooking is the number-one cause of holiday home fires.
  • Know how to handle a grease fire: Never use water — instead, turn off the heat and slide a lid over the pan, or use a Class K or multipurpose extinguisher.
  • Plug high-wattage appliances directly into wall outlets.
  • Test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
  • Check in on seniors and older adults. Make sure alarms work, space heaters are used safely, and walkways are clear.

Things NOT To Do

  • Don’t overload electrical outlets.
  • Don’t leave space heaters running unattended.
  • Don’t place candles near curtains or holiday greenery.
  • Don’t block exits with gifts or decorations.
  • Don’t use outdoor lights indoors or indoor lights outdoors.

🎁 Extra Safety Tips for a Smooth Holiday

  • Keep a lid nearby to smother small stovetop fires.
  • Make sure holiday guests know your home’s emergency exits.
  • Place Menorah, Kinara, or Advent candles on sturdy, non-flammable surfaces.
  • Leave fireworks to licensed professionals.
  • If using a fireplace, clean your chimney, use a screen, and never burn wrapping paper or tree branches.
