Artesia Boulevard Bridge Emergency Repairs
When a fire from a homeless encampment severely damaged the Artesia Boulevard Bridge, the closure disrupted a critical transportation link connecting residents to Compton College, Metro A Line, and nearby businesses. The Public Works Engineering Department responded immediately—launching an emergency repair project that restored this essential corridor safely and efficiently.
Working closely with the Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority (ACTA) and Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR), the engineering team replaced the damaged bridge spans, upgraded pavement and railings, and introduced an innovative under-bridge security system designed to prevent future fire incidents. The custom-designed steel and precast concrete barrier walls, supported by helical pile foundations, represent one of the first applications of this technology in public infrastructure—showcasing Compton’s leadership in modern, resilient design.
The bridge reopened to the public in October 2024, reconnecting the community and improving safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Its completion eliminated lengthy detours, reduced traffic congestion, and decreased greenhouse gas emissions from thousands of daily commuters.
In September 2025, the engineering team applied for two major engineering honors—the 2026 Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and the 2025 Project of the Year Award from the American Public Works Association (APWA). This project reflects not only the technical achievements of the engineering team but also the City’s dedication to sustainable and equitable infrastructure solutions.
The Public Works Engineering Department is proud to deliver projects that strengthen our City’s resilience, enhance safety, and improve daily life for all residents.
